Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
